Adding a fragrance-free body lotion to your skincare routine can help soothe and moisturize dry skin. When shopping for dry or sensitive skin, dermatologists generally recommend looking for ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and ceramides, which help replenish essential skin barrier components. For drier skin, thicker creams can be preferable to lotions because they do a better job of locking in moisture and supporting the skin barrier.

Some products marketed as fragrance-free still contain essential oils, botanical extracts, or other naturally scented ingredients that may irritate sensitive skin. That is why it is worth checking the full ingredient list rather than relying on the front label alone, especially if you are trying to avoid masking fragrance or other known triggers.

If you prefer a lighter moisturizer for everyday use, compare these richer creams with our guide to affordable fragrance-free body moisturizers, where we also check current formulas and ingredient lists.

The best fragrance-free body lotions and creams to try

There are now far more fragrance-free moisturizers available than there were a few years ago, but they are not all equally good for dry skin. Some are light and easy to wear during the day, while others are much richer and better suited to very dry skin or nighttime use.

We tested these products in everyday use, paying attention to how easily they spread, how quickly they absorbed, whether they left a greasy or sticky residue, and how our skin felt afterward.

That is also why several richer products rank highly even though they serve different purposes. Some worked best before bed, while lighter options such as Advanced Repair Lotion were easier and more comfortable to use during the day.

Our picks of the best fragrance-free body lotions and creams

These recommendations are based on several months of daily use.

Our #1 pick

Eucerin Advanced Repair Cream

Our rating:

Current Eucerin Advanced Repair Cream jar

We chose Eucerin Advanced Repair Cream as the best balance of performance and value. It softened dry skin without feeling greasy, although the cream we used took a little while to absorb. Because it took longer to absorb, we preferred using it after an evening shower instead of in the morning.

Eucerin currently describes Advanced Repair Cream as fragrance-free, dye-free, and paraben-free, with Ceramide-3 and five Natural Moisturizing Factors. Eucerin describes it as fast-absorbing. That was not our experience with the cream we used.

The formula contains an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), so if you use it on exposed skin, follow Eucerin’s advice to use sunscreen and limit sun exposure.

Runner-up

Clinique Deep Comfort Body Butter

Our rating:

Current Clinique Deep Comfort Body Butter jar

The Body Butter feels silky and luxurious, and it does an excellent job of making dry skin feel softer and more comfortable.

Is it worth paying around four times as much as Eucerin Advanced Repair Cream? Probably not for everyday use. But it does not have to be an either-or choice. Eucerin is the more practical option for daily moisturizing, while Clinique is a great choice when your skin needs something richer or you simply want a more luxurious cream.

Clinique currently describes Deep Comfort Body Butter as 100% fragrance-free and free of phthalates. Its key ingredients include shea butter, glycerin, and hyaluronic acid.

Other options we recommend

Vanicream Moisturizing Cream

Our rating:

Current Vanicream Moisturizing Cream pump jar

Vanicream Moisturizing Cream is accepted by the National Eczema Association. The current ingredient list contains no fragrance, masking fragrance, botanical extracts, essential oils, dyes, lanolin, parabens, or formaldehyde. The product page lists ten ingredients and does not include BHT, although its FAQ refers to 11 ingredients.

This cream can be used on dry, irritated, cracked, or itchy skin, including dry skin associated with eczema, psoriasis, and ichthyosis. It is also gluten-free and non-comedogenic.

We found the cream very dense, so we preferred applying it before bed and giving it time to soak in before getting under the sheets.

Vanicream describes the current cream as easy to spread and fast-absorbing, but the cream we used felt dense and slow to absorb.

Vanicream also makes a lighter version called Vanicream Moisturizing Lotion. The lotion is better suited to less dry skin and daytime application.

Cetaphil Moisturizing Fragrance-Free Body Lotion

Our rating:

Current Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream 16 oz jar

Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream is a thick, moisture-rich fragrance-free body lotion with vitamin E. It comforts and hydrates dry to very dry, sensitive skin without leaving a sticky feeling.

This petrolatum-based moisturizing cream works well for drier skin, leaving it feeling soft and smooth. It does take a little while to absorb, so we preferred using it at night after showering, when we could give it time to soak in.

Cetaphil currently labels the cream fragrance-free. Its ingredients include petrolatum, glycerin, niacinamide, panthenol, vitamin E, and Prunus Amygdalus Dulcis (sweet almond) oil.

Cetaphil Moisturizing Cream kept our skin smooth and hydrated. While we prefer body lotions without oils, this cream didn’t irritate our skin. It also didn’t have a scent. Sweet almond oil is not the same as added fragrance, although readers who avoid almond-derived ingredients may prefer another option.

Eucerin Original Healing Fragrance-Free Body Lotion

Our rating:

Eucerin Original Healing Fragrance-Free Lotion is one of the best fragrance-free body lotions.

Eucerin currently describes Original Healing Lotion as fragrance-free, dye-free, and paraben-free. It is richer than Advanced Repair Lotion, our lighter everyday pick, and is intended for extremely dry skin.

It is quite a rich lotion, and some people may find the consistency too thick for daily use. We think Advanced Repair Lotion works better for that. However, we recommend keeping Eucerin Original Healing Lotion in stock for severe bouts of skin dryness.

Eucerin Advanced Repair Fragrance-Free Body Lotion

Our rating:

Current Eucerin Advanced Repair Lotion 5% Urea pump bottle

Eucerin Advanced Repair Lotion is an affordable pick from one of our all-time favorite allergy-friendly brands. The current fragrance-free, dye-free, and paraben-free formula contains Ceramide-3 and five Natural Moisturizing Factors.

We found Advanced Repair Lotion non-greasy and easy to use every day. It contains shea butter, and we haven’t experienced any skin irritation.

It absorbed quickly into our skin, leaving a lightweight, unnoticeable coat. However, it was not quite as effective against severe dryness as Eucerin Original Healing Lotion, so we preferred Advanced Repair Lotion as an everyday option.

The formula contains an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), so if you use it on exposed skin, follow Eucerin’s advice to use sunscreen and limit sun exposure.
