Coppertone Pure & Simple SPF 50 is our best current fragrance-free mineral sunscreen. It was the runner-up in our original test, with a silky texture that rubbed in easily and did not leave a white film. Neutrogena Invisible Daily Defense SPF 60+ is our favorite when avoiding white cast matters most, while CeraVe Hydrating Sheer SPF 30 is the easiest everyday face-and-body option.
We spent several months using fragrance-free sunscreens in and around San Diego, including hotter trips to Arizona. Seven of the nine products from our original list remain in the current ranking. In August 2026, we checked the US product pages and Drug Facts labels to make sure the names and active ingredients still matched the sunscreens we used.

All seven are currently labeled fragrance-free, broad spectrum, SPF 30 or higher, and water-resistant for 80 minutes. Water resistance is not the same as all-day protection. Reapply according to the product label, including after swimming, sweating, or towel drying.
How we tested the sunscreens
We used the sunscreens over several months in hot, sunny conditions. We paid closest attention to the parts you cannot learn from a Drug Facts box: whether a product had a noticeable smell, how easily it spread, how quickly it absorbed, whether it left a white cast or greasy film, how it felt after drying, and whether the packaging made application easier or harder.
Our testing covered how the sunscreens felt and wore. SPF, active ingredients, broad-spectrum status, and water resistance come from the Drug Facts labels.
The right sunscreen is ultimately the one you will apply generously and use again. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends broad-spectrum protection, SPF 30 or higher, and water resistance. Every active pick below meets those three criteria.
Why choose a fragrance-free sunscreen?
Fragrance does not add anything to a sunscreen's UV protection. If perfume irritates your skin, triggers symptoms, or simply makes a product unpleasant to wear, sunscreen is an easy place to remove it.
Fragrance-free does not mean botanical-free or guaranteed irritation-free. Several picks below contain aloe, seed oils, or plant extracts while still being labeled fragrance-free. The best fragrance-free sunscreens we tested
1. Coppertone Pure & Simple SPF 50 Mineral Lotion
Coppertone was our original runner-up and is now our top current mineral pick. It felt silky compared with chalkier mineral sunscreens, rubbed in without much effort, and did not leave an obvious white film after application.
The current Pure & Simple SPF 50 Mineral Lotion remains fragrance-free and uses 24.08% zinc oxide. It is a broad-spectrum lotion with 80-minute water resistance. If you want a mineral body sunscreen and care about easy application, this is where we would start.

2. Neutrogena Invisible Daily Defense SPF 60+ Fragrance Free
Neutrogena left no white cast in our test. The lotion felt silky, spread with little effort, and dried quickly. It is a particularly useful alternative if you dislike the thicker feel of mineral sunscreen.
The current Invisible Daily Defense SPF 60+ Fragrance Free is a chemical sunscreen. The lotion remains broad spectrum and water-resistant for 80 minutes.

3. Babo Botanicals Sheer Zinc Mineral Sunscreen Lotion SPF 30
Babo Botanicals was thicker than the first two mineral lotions, but it was still easy to apply. Once we gave it a moment to absorb, we did not notice it rubbing off onto fabric. That makes it a good choice when you want a straightforward zinc sunscreen and do not mind spending a little longer working it into the skin.
The current Sheer Zinc Mineral Sunscreen Lotion SPF 30 uses 16% zinc oxide and is labeled fragrance-free, broad spectrum, and water-resistant for 80 minutes. It contains several plant oils and extracts. That does not make it fragranced, but it matters if you also avoid particular botanical ingredients.

4. Babyganics Mineral Sunscreen Spray SPF 50+
The Babyganics spray had no noticeable scent in our test and stayed put well during use.
The current Mineral Sunscreen Spray SPF 50+ still lists the same active filters as the tested version: 3.5% titanium dioxide and 7.25% zinc oxide. It is labeled fragrance-free, broad spectrum, and water-resistant for 80 minutes.

5. CeraVe Hydrating Sheer Sunscreen SPF 30 for Face and Body
CeraVe was our favorite for everyday use. The fluid lotion felt lightweight, spread easily, and absorbed without leaving white residue. It also left our skin feeling hydrated rather than dry, which made it easier to reach for on ordinary days.
The current Hydrating Sheer Sunscreen SPF 30 is a hybrid with zinc oxide and three chemical filters. It is fragrance-free, non-comedogenic, broad spectrum, and water-resistant for 80 minutes.

6. Bondi Sands SPF 50 Everyday Sunscreen Lotion
Bondi Sands had a more fluid consistency than the mineral lotions we tested. It spread quickly, absorbed without much work, and did not leave a greasy residue or visible white marks. We would choose it for generous body application when a thick lotion makes sunscreen feel like a chore.
The current US SPF 50 Everyday Sunscreen Lotion is fragrance-free and uses the same four chemical active filters recorded in our test. Its US Drug Facts label states broad-spectrum protection and 80-minute water resistance.

7. Alba Botanica Sensitive Sunscreen Spray SPF 50
Alba Botanica was very quick-drying in our test. It went on easily, did not leave a greasy film, and had no noticeable scent. We used it for several months on very sensitive skin without a reaction.
There is one practical flaw: the nozzle became stuck on several containers we tested. The current Sensitive Sunscreen Spray SPF 50 remains fragrance-free, broad spectrum, and water-resistant for 80 minutes, but the packaging issue keeps it from ranking higher.

What happened to our former top picks?
Blue Lizard Sensitive Mineral SPF 50
Blue Lizard was the overall winner in our original comparison. The version we tested was easy to rub in for a mineral sunscreen, felt non-greasy and non-drying, and left only a slight white cast. The bottle also changed color in UV light. It was a fun gimmick.
Blue Lizard now describes its Sensitive Mineral SPF 50 as a “new and improved formula” with aloe. Although the active-filter percentages are unchanged, we have not used the new formula, so it is not part of the current ranking.
Vanicream Sunscreen Broad Spectrum SPF 50+
The Vanicream SPF 50+ mineral sunscreen we tested absorbed well and had a matte finish, though it was not as smooth to spread as Blue Lizard or Coppertone. Vanicream's current sun-care range no longer lists that body sunscreen. The only sunscreen in its official catalog is now the distinct Facial Moisturizer SPF 30. It does not replace the body sunscreen reviewed here.
Mineral, chemical, or hybrid sunscreen?
Choose based on the finish you will tolerate and the format you will apply properly. Mineral sunscreens use zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, or both. They can feel thicker and may leave a white cast, although Coppertone was easy to rub in and did not leave a white film in our test.
Chemical sunscreens tend to spread more easily and leave less visible residue. Neutrogena and Bondi Sands were the clearest examples in our test. Hybrid sunscreens combine mineral and chemical active filters, as CeraVe Hydrating Sheer does.
All three types can provide effective protection when they are broad spectrum, SPF 30 or higher, and used as directed. The AAD notes that mineral formulas are often recommended for sensitive skin, but the best format is still the one you can apply generously and reapply.
How to apply sunscreen properly
The FDA and AAD give straightforward application advice:
- Apply sunscreen to dry skin about 15 minutes before going outside.
- Most adults need about one ounce to cover exposed body skin.
- Reapply about every two hours outdoors and after swimming or sweating, following the label.
- Reapply immediately after towel drying.
- Combine sunscreen with shade, clothing, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses.
For a spray, apply until the skin glistens and then rub it in for even coverage. Do not spray it near the face or mouth, into the wind, or where it may be inhaled. Spray sunscreen should also be kept away from heat, flames, and smoking.
No sunscreen is waterproof. “Water-resistant for 80 minutes” applies to swimming or sweating, not permission to wait 80 minutes after every application or to skip the usual two-hour reapplication.
Bottom line
The best sunscreen on this list is the one you will use enough of and reapply. Every current pick is fragrance-free, broad spectrum, SPF 30 or higher, and water-resistant for 80 minutes. The remaining differences are texture, finish, filters, and format.
